What are your children's interests? Their likes and dislikes? Once you have narrowed it down to 2 or 3 themes that could work for you, the next thing you would want to do is think about any furniture in the room. Do you want it to match the theme or just be basic table and chairs, etc? For the Princess/Fairytales theme, for example, you could just do white table with chairs, white shelving, etc. Or, you could find furniture (or make it) that has the same theme. When choosing furniture, make sure it is easily washable (if you care) to keep it cleaner longer. Also, if you still have young children (2 and under), make sure you secure shelving, or other items that could fall on baby, to the wall. At the same time, make sure you do not overdo the furniture. We could all go crazy buying every single thing we see that could make the room extra cute - but remember to leave some floor space for girls to play dolls or the boys to drive their trucks.
When choosing paint for the walls, use a non toxic brand and one that washes easily. There are many places out there that offer child-friendly paints. If your children are a little older, invite them to help you put the room together. Children tend to appreciate things more when they are involved in the process. It is also good bonding time for you, and brings their creativity to life as well.
When adding their toys/books/crafts to the room, use baskets to organize. Put the toys that your children like the best closer to the floor, while putting books and stuffed animals higher up. Keep crafts together (paper, crayons, stickers, popsicle sticks, etc) and in a bin close to the table.
The main thing is have fun! Give your children an environment that they want to play and learn in - that is the success!
